40 Mile Desert
The 40 Mile Desert is located in rural Churchill County, between Lovelock, NV and Fernley along the route of
I-80. It was one of the most feared sections on the California Trail. After leaving the Humboldt
River Sink and the Rye Patch, the pioneers had to traverse about 40 miles to the Truckee River or the Carson
River for the next usable water. Many didn't make it.
